Facilitator guide: Building Responsibly: Design Thinking with AI

75 minutesReview status: Being checked

Materials

  • Projector.
  • Devices with an AI tool your school allows, or StudyBuddy rule cards for the partner version.
  • Printed design brief templates and peer rubrics.
  • Role cards for the Ship or Wait debate.

Lesson steps

  1. 1. It worked as designed (Explainer, 5 min)
  2. 2. Four design questions (Explainer, 7 min)
  3. 3. You get what you measure (Explainer, 7 min)
  4. 4. Red-team StudyBuddy (Activity, 12 min)
  5. 5. Ship it? (Scenario, 6 min)
  6. 6. Quick check (Quick check, 4 min)
  7. 7. Your design brief (Reflect, 5 min)
  8. 8. Recap (Recap, 3 min)

Timing for a 75-minute class

For 60 minutes, assign the design brief as homework. For 90 minutes, add peer reviews of the briefs in class.

Minutes What happens Format
0-3 Pre-check Individual
3-10 Step 1: what should they have measured? Whole class
10-22 Step 2: work the four questions for the board-meeting tool together Whole class
22-32 Step 3: the Hugging Face case, then the detention question in pairs Pairs
32-47 Step 4 red-team StudyBuddy, including the flattery test Pairs
47-55 Step 5 Ship it? with roles: product manager, engineer, counselor, investor Groups of four
55-59 Step 6 quick check Individual
59-72 Step 7: ARK’s view, reflect, and start the design brief Individual
72-75 Step 8 recap and post-check Whole class

Before you start

  • Set red-teaming limits out loud before Step 4. Homework rules only. No attempts to get harmful, hateful, sexual, or dangerous content. Anyone who goes outside the limits stops.
  • The Hugging Face case is about AI agents attacking computer systems. Teach what happened and why. Don’t discuss hacking methods beyond what the step says.
  • Some product ideas students choose may involve mental health, safety, or minors. Steer those briefs toward safeguards and adult review, and away from collecting sensitive data.
  • ARK’s view is an opinion, labeled as one. Invite students to argue with it. No grade depends on agreeing.

Discussion prompts

Use the deck’s Ship or Wait debate: PM, engineer, counselor, investor. Then the “You’re the CEO” prompt: your app goes viral overnight and a user finds a harmful loophole. What do you do first?

Answer notes

Quick check: 1 C, 2 B, 3 C, 4 A, 5 C. Pre/post: 1 C, 2 A, 3 B. If learners miss question 4, have one student make a wrong claim with confidence and another play a chatbot that agrees.
