Before you start
- Instagram requires users to be 13 or older in most regions, and learners are 11 to 13. Do not ask who has an account.
- Reflect is private. Do not ask learners to share their devices or what they wrote.
- The quiz app and the policy lines are invented.
- Name products only as examples.
- Any settings check happens at home with a parent or guardian.
Discussion prompts
- What would you trade for a free app, and what would you never trade?
- If an app is free, who is paying for it, and how?
- When you share your contacts, who else is affected?
- Which of the three policy questions matters most to you? Why?
Answer notes
- Step 2 sort: the first six are Needed. Flashlight and contacts, and Instagram and contacts, are Not needed. Let learners argue edge cases before you reveal.
- Step 3 sort: two lines for each question. Accept a different answer if a learner can point to the words that support it.
- Step 5: B and D are the strongest. C is also safe. A gives away the most. Accept any choice a learner can explain.
- Step 6: B, D, C, A, B.
- Pre/post: B, C, A.
- Discussion prompts have no single right answer. For the second one, steer toward ads, shared data, and paid upgrades. Do not claim how any one company makes money unless you have checked.
